What is Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)
Sickle Cell disease is an inherited disorder of the hemoglobin molecule within the red blood cell, which causes the blood cell to change shape from a disc into a crescent, or sickle shape. As a result, it is not effective in transporting oxygen and can cause extremely painful and dangerous blockages in blood vessels.
Newborn Screening (NBS)
Manitoba is the only province in Canada left to add Sickle Cell Disease to their New Born Registry. It is of utmost importance to get SCD on the list to avoid missed diagnosis
Education
We will provide education sessions for patients, families, and health care workers in order to work towards standardized care in Manitoba for all patients living with SCD
Advocacy
The Sickle Circle of Manitoba aims to be a sounding voice for all individuals affected by SCD. Through our community we will tackle the challenges Sickle Cell presents, and stand against adversity to break down the social barriers associated with the disease.
Outreach
The Sickle Circle of Manitoba provides patient outreach to it’s members in need. Weather it’s support in getting to medical appointments, or resource materials to help educate. Feel free to reach out.
